Żywiec położony jest w centrum Kotliny Żywieckiej zajmującej powierzchnię ponad 100 km2 i otoczonej malowniczymi pasmami Beskidów. Od zachodu Kotlinę Żywiecką zamyka pasmo Beskidu Śląskiego, z północy jej granice wyznacza Beskid Mały, od wschodu pasmo Jałowieckie a od południa najwyższe szczyty Beskidu Żywieckiego. Miasto leży u zbiegu górskich rzek Soły i Koszarawy, nad Jeziorem Żywieckim. Żywiec nazywany stolicą Beskidów, jest ważnym ośrodkiem turystyczno-rekreacyjnym a także centrum jednego z najpiękniejszych i najciekawszych pod względem etnograficznym regionów w Polsce – Żywiecczyzny.

Żywiec is located in the centre of the Żywiec Basin, covering an area of more than 100 km2, and is surrounded by the picturesque peaks of the Beskid Mountains. In the west, the Żywiec Basin is bordered by the Silesian Beskids, in the north by the Little Beskids, in the east by the Jałowiec range, and in the south by the high peaks of the Żywiec Beskids. The city lies at the confluence of the Soła and Koszarawa rivers, on the shores of lake Żywiec. The city is often called the capital of the Beskids, and is an important tourism and recreational destination, as well as the heartland of one of the most interesting regions in Poland in terms of ethnography, the Żywiec Lands.
