CIEKAWOSTKA
Znanych jest kilka wersji, co do pochodzenia nazwy Żywiec. Jedna z nich mówi o kulcie pogańskiej bogini Żywii, inna, że pochodzi od słowa „żywić”, co wskazuje na to, że tutejsze ziemie były urodzajne i obfitowały w zwierzynę. Istnieje też wersja, że nazwa pochodzi od schwytanego żywcem - w okolicach Międzybrodzia Żywieckiego - żubra, którego ofiarowano Księciu Oświęcimskiemu, a on na pamiątkę tego zdarzenia nadał miastu herb, na którym - na niebieskim tle - widnieje orzeł trzymający w szponach głowę żubra.
The dynamic period of the city’s growth were sparked by its increasing industrialisation beginning in the mid-19th century. It was then that a metalworking plant manufacturing screws, a paper manufacturing plant and printshop were as established, as well as the brewery which has since then been associated with the name of Żywiec, established in 1856 by Albrecht Habsburg. The period following the war was marked by the development of industry and cooperative factories. Nearly all areas of the city were expanded with new housing estates and cultural and educational facilities. The city was given a new look in 1967 when the earthen retaining dam was constructed in Tresna resulting in the formation of Lake Żywiec, filled with the rising waters of the Soła. Nowadays, the lake is an important element of the dynamic growth of tourism in the region. In 1999, as a result of the reorganised administrative
division of the country Żywiec became a part of śląskie the voivodeship.
Początki dynamicznego rozwoju miasta, związane z jego uprzemysłowieniem, sięgają połowy XIX wieku. Wtedy powstał tu m.in. zakład metalurgiczny produkcji śrub, fabryka papieru i drukarnia, jak również nieodmiennie kojarzony z Żywcem – browar założony w 1856 r. przez Albrechta Habsburga. Okres powojenny zaznaczył się w historii miasta rozwojem przemysłu oraz zakładów spółdzielczych. Prawie we wszystkich dzielnicach powstały nowe osiedla mieszkaniowe i placówki kulturalno-oświatowe. Soły zaporą ziemną w Tresnej powstało Jezioro Żywieckie, stanowiące obecnie ważny składnik dynamicznego rozwoju turystyki. W 1999 r.
w wyniku nowego podziału administracyjnego kraju, Żywiec stał się częścią województwa śląskiego.
FUN FACT
There are several different explanations for the name Żywiec. One links the name to a pagan cult worshipping the goddess Żywia, while another claims that the name derives from the Polish word żywić (meaning “feed or nourish”), reflecting the fertile lands and rich game available in the area. There is also a theory that the name was bestowed on the town by the Duke of Oświęcim in gratitude for a European bison captured live (“schwytany żywcem” in Polish) in the area of Międzybrodzie Żywiecki and offered to the duke; the City emblem features an eagle on a blue field holding in its talons the head of a bison.
